Educational visits are always something to look forward to; doubly so when they are nearby and such an unexpected learning delight. Over two recent Friday afternoons, Wolverton Railcare works has hosted members of Year 5, who have been learning about the history of transportation this term. Long glass and brick buildings, often passed by and taken for granted, turned out to hide vast stores of railway hardware and resources; after an informative Powerpoint about the fascinating history of the works, the children were treated to an in-depth tour of the works floor by experienced and apprentice workers. A highlight was seeing a 150-year old London underground carriage currently being readied for anniversary celebrations next year. Our pupils behaved extremely well, raised excellent questions and were clearly interested in seeing the world of work so close to home. It was a great success and hopefully will be much repeated in the future.
